Process printing or CMYK printing is the (ahem) process of adding 4 basic colors together in such a pattern sometimes in a tightly packed formation of dots that they create a full pallette of colors.  The tightly packed dots are called halftones.  While the color gamut isn't foolproof, the Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Key (Black) inks alone can produce a nearly photographic quality print.  When combined with other graphic elements, the possibilities are nearly endless.
